Many of you who know me also know how much I enjoy writing and publishing, especially when I can blend my gaming interests with 1980s nostalgia and pop culture. My love for Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books yielded a bioethics thriller novel available on Amazon here. Now, I've also managed to co-author a chapter in a scholarly (but accessible) anthology devoted to psychological themes in D&D.
Yesterday, the book was released! My colleague and friend from graduate school agreed to co-author a chapter on moral philosophy and moral psychology and how it relates to alignment in D&D. Spoiler alert: it doesn't. As Gollum would say about alignment, "we hates it - we hates it forever." My colleague, Jim Okapal, and I argue that alignment isn't a great way to deal with moral dimensions in role playing games. The book and our chapter are available as a PDF download here. I've also put the link under the Research tab on the GameOn! website, as it adds to the research in the area of role playing games. Enjoy, and GameOn!
